Ships that cross oceans for a living.
Bulk carriers, tankers, container and general cargo ships in international trade, where fuel is the largest cost of the voyage and every passage crosses more than one rulebook.
01Seasons
Seasons that reshape a passage.
Every ocean has its seasons. A plan that knows them costs less to sail. A short orientation, from general climatology:
- 01
North Pacific, winter
Deep lows run east from Japan towards the Gulf of Alaska, straight across the great-circle tracks between Asia and North America.
- 02
Arabian Sea, south-west monsoon
From about June to September, strong winds and heavy swell across the northern Indian Ocean.
- 03
North Atlantic, hurricane season
1 June to 30 November, with the peak from August to October.
- 04
Western North Pacific, typhoons
Possible in any month, most frequent from July to October.
- 05
Off south-east Africa, the Agulhas
A strong south-west-going current meets south-westerly gales; abnormal waves are a known hazard off the coast.
02Rules
Rules that travel with the ship.
One voyage can cross three rulebooks before the next port. Each has a short briefing in Insights.
